There are a number of Christians in this world who only focus on repenting your sins to achieve salvation and that everything that is evil is the work of Satan. By teaching “if you sin, you are damned to hell” contradicts the Bible. There are far better parts of the Bible which teach love, happiness, forgiveness, and acceptance that seem to be overlooked by many.
Here are a few Bible quotes which promote acceptance of others, no matter what they have done or who they are:
- “You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Leviticus 19:18; Romans 13:9)
- "Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." (Romans 13:10)
- "The most important commandment is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." (Mark 12:29-31)
There are far more Bible quotes that could be added here that teach God’s acceptance and forgiveness for sin, but those few are enough to make a point. You know, Rasputin preached that God forgives all sins. “Sin and sin a lot” as he is so famously quoted would contradict all the teachings of Fundamentalist.
A valid argument could be made about how to interpret these teachings of the Bible. The Bible does promote ethics. But under this same premise, the Bible also teaches against hate. So basically, the Bible asks for you to be a moral person but if someone is being immoral, it is none of your business unless they are harming someone or something.
One of the biggest hypocrisies are those who preach against evil, and only evil. They preach only what is bad and that we are all going to hell. Not only does this preach against the teachings of the Bible, mainly against Jesus, but the Bible warns you about these people!
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Mathew 7:15-20)
Now the idioms here are a bit outdated and do not make much sense to the average American, but here is what it is basically saying in modern American English:"Beware of false prophets, for they will come to you like someone meek. That are like raving wolves. You will know them by what they teach. Every good man will bring forth good teachings but an evil man can only teach what is evil."
This is probably the most important verses in the Bible. These few lines teach love, happiness, forgiveness, and acceptance while saying to beware of evil as well. Anyone who is teaching healthy, moral spirituality is good, even if it contradicts your beliefs; however, it is a warning that those who only preach against what is considered “evil” know evil. Basically, for them to preach about how bad it is, one must truly know how bad it is, meaning they have to have done it to find out. For example, a fundamentalist published a book about the evils of Harry Potter. Now, for him to know that Harry Potter is evil, he would of have to have read Harry Potter books. How else would he know Harry Potter is evil, in his own opinion?
Now, some argue that they are not condemning others by preaching was it evil and they are not only preaching what is evil. They claim that they are teaching the word of the lord and that can not be evil. People fail to realize that like every story has two sides, every teaching might be considered good or evil. There is a balance in nature. Good and evil exist in all. But those who are preaching the word of the lord using only quote which lay out punishment for those who have sinned is preaching only evil. To them, they are spreading the word and that is good, but by the account of their own Bible, spreading the word of only which that is evil is an evil act in itself.
The biggest problem with teaching is that people pick in chose as to what to teach. According to Jesus, you should teach all, whether it is good or bad. The person will decide if it is good or not. There is irony that surrounds people who preach only what they think is bad. For instance, Leviticus 18:22-23 teaches that homosexuality is an "abomination" and people who engage in such acts should be put to death. People preach this portion of Leviticus but leave out other parts which they consider "insignificant." Leviticus 11:1-8 teaches that you should not eat pork. Leviticus 11:10-12 teaches that clams, oysters, crabs, lobsters, and shrimp are abominations as well. So the question is this: Why are certain parts overlooked but other parts are strictly inforced? Answer: Those who teach only evil know only evil!
The Book of Mathew teaches us a lot. Love everyone equally and accept goodness into your heart. Resist evil by ignoring evil. Do not let evil fester in your heart or you will become evil. There is good and evil in us all, teach both and you will be accepted into the “kingdom of heaven,” but if you teach only which is evil, then you are evil. Accept everyone for who they are and what they are, no matter if what they do contradicts your beliefs. Everyone has the right to do whatever they want, that is freewill, so long as they do not harm others.
