McCain for President!

Jarred James Breaux

When that first Tuesday of November 2008 comes around, I will cast my vote for Senator John McCain, that is, if McCain makes it through the primary. McCain has run several times for president in the past and had considerable support; however, he never had enough support. He is famous for his Democratic views, although he is a Republican. And when his "Republican" values are questioned, he quotes some of the greatest conservative Republicans out there, like Abraham Lincoln and Barry Goldwater.

McCain knows that the United States is a country of immigrants and will continue to prosper because of the freedoms it offers to people abroad. While McCain believes in keeping our borders secure, he believes that a wall has never helped any country. Furthermore, he understands that deporting two million illegal aliens is ridiculous and has proposed a plan to allow worker vouchers. He wants to fine the illegal aliens for entering the country illegally instead of detaining them; however, that fine is the same as the cost of obtaining legal immigration to the country.

While McCain supports a strong central government and American forces, he calls for a smaller government and a decrease in government spending. He wants a more efficient and responsible government; a government actually for the people and not for the lobbyists or special interests groups. He also plans to encourage entrepreneurs by decreasing taxes and simplifying the tax system.

Caught up in a war in the Middle-East, we need a president who is able to take command and who knows what he is doing. McCain is a war veteran and understands what it is like to be on the frontline. He was also a prisoner of war and will protect the rights of prisoners on American soil. He has called for an end to torture as a method of obtaining information and has called for the protection of first amendment rights for Americans. Also, he understands how an immediate withdrawal from Iraq would be a mistake and would threaten the security of our country as well as Iraq. If we withdrawal, we might as well hand Iraq over to Iran, or worse, terrorists. Finally, he is an advocate of the missile defense system and understands that it is only a defense system, not an aggressive move by our government.

Furthermore, McCain has been an advocate of the pro-life agenda. He believes that the fetus has a right to life and that the Judiciary system, in the Roe vs. Wade decision, did not have the right to make their personal opinions the rule of law without the consent of the American people. He believes in strict constriction of the constitution, the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson. He also believes that an amendment should be a last ditch effort to enforce federal law and strongly believes in states' right.

Senator John McCain is a born leader and has always stood up for what he believed. He rarely backs down and has even fought lonely battles on the Senate floor. He is a brave man who fought for his country in the military and continues to fight for the rights of the tax-paying Americans. Senator John McCain will have my vote in the primary and, hopefully, he will have my vote come that first Tuesday of November 2008.
